Infertility

At what point should I be evaluated for infertility?

Women who are intending to get pregnant, and have not been successful after a year of unprotected sex, may wish to consider being evaluated for infertility. There are a variety of medical and psychological etiologies for why one may be unable to conceive.

Why am I infertile?

Potential causes for infertility include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Fibroids
  • Abnormal hormone levels
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • High stress

Why should I see a urogynecologist for infertility?

Dr. Shakiba is a specialist at determining any abnormalities or etiologies that occur in the pelvic region. For that reason, he is able to direct a patient’s plan of care towards the necessary path in order to increase her chances of conceiving. Dr. Shakiba sits with his patients to obtain an extensive personal history and subsequently performs a pelvic exam to determine if there are any obviously palpable or visualized abnormalities. If an anatomical abnormality is detected, Dr. Shakiba will order any necessary testing such as pelvic sonograms or bloodwork to provide more conclusive findings.

In some cases surgery may be warranted to resolve the cause for a woman’s infertility. For instance, a woman suffering from severe endometriosis or complex ovarian cysts would require surgery to return her pelvis to typical physiology making it feasible for an embryo to develop. In those circumstances, Dr. Shakiba would be the lead surgeon on the case. His extensive experience with such surgeries acts as a comfort to his patients, ensuring them that they are in the best hands possible.
