Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

What is pelvic floor dysfunction?

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction occurs when the pelvic muscles including the bladder, uterus, and bowel are weakened and inadequate to provide a complete bowel movement or fully voiding of the bladder. Symptoms associated with pelvic floor dysfunction include constipation, fecal urgency, urinary frequency, and pelvic pain. The weakening of the muscles can be caused by age, obesity, constant straining due to chronic constipation, and vaginal deliveries.

How can pelvic floor dysfunction be treated?

The main cause for pelvic floor dysfunction is weakened pelvic floor muscles so the goal to help those with PFD would be to strengthen those muscles. There are in-office procedures available such as *biofeedback* that can help strengthen those muscles as well as demonstrate to patients how to properly perform kegel exercises to optimize results.
