Vaginal Atrophy

What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy occurs when the vaginal epithelium becomes thin and more sensitive, causing a “dryness” feeling within the vagina. It occurs in patients who are low in estrogen, whether that be due their post-menopausal state or another medical condition that prevents their body from creating estrogen. Vaginal atrophy can cause a constant feeling of dryness and discomfort, making life uncomfortable on a daily basis as well as cause significant pain with intercourse.

How can I treat vaginal atrophy?

Since vaginal atrophy is caused by lack of estrogen, supplementing estrogen into your medical regimen can help improve the symptoms. Estrogen can be obtained in the form of a pill and/or a vaginal cream. The cream is applied at home by the patient using an applicator either once or twice a week, depending on the severity of the atrophy. For women who cannot have hormone replacements due to a personal history of breast cancer, the option of Mona Lisa Laser treatment is also available.
